As
a part of Gorbachev's peristroika and glastnost policies in the 80's,
religious liberties were gradually given to the citizens of the Soviet
Union. |

The different republics have each reacted in different ways to their new religious freedoms and the influx of religious groups. Russia and Belarus, for example, have each set limitations by which religious organizations can (those having been registered with the government for more that 15 years) and cannot operate publicly in their borders. This was a result of heavy
pressure from the Russian Orthodox church. In the mid-90's, the Jehovah's
Witnesses held their largest world conference ever with more baptisms
than they have ever had. The doors continue to remain open for missionaries to work in Ukraine, but for how long? |
