Spiritual climate

GorbachevAs a part of Gorbachev's peristroika and glastnost policies in the 80's, religious liberties were gradually given to the citizens of the Soviet Union.
Once the Soviet Union collapsed these "religious freedoms"multiplied at tremendous rates. As a result, religious groups began pouring into these new "open"republics.
Unfortunately, Christianity was not the only "religion" that entered into these countries.
Cults such as Mormonism, Jehovah's Witness, Hare Krishna, and others saw these countries as fertile ground for their teachings.
In Ukraine, several home-grown cults emerged such as the infamous White Brotherhood.

The different republics have each reacted in different ways to their new religious freedoms and the influx of religious groups. Russia and Belarus, for example, have each set limitations by which religious organizations can (those having been registered with the government for more that 15 years) and cannot operate publicly in their borders.

This was a result of heavy pressure from the Russian Orthodox church.
In Ukraine, however, the Orthodox church is divided into at least four different factions. It seems too difficult for them to acquire the pressure needed to force such a law as the one Russia passed.
Thus, religious organizations have flourished in Ukraine. As far as the cults are concerned, Ukraine has been one of the fastest growing areas for them in the world.

In the mid-90's, the Jehovah's Witnesses held their largest world conference ever with more baptisms than they have ever had.
In the near future, the Mormon organization will be constructing its first temple in all of Eastern Europe right in Kiev itself.
There is an obvious urgency to share the liberating truth of the Gospel with the Ukrainian people.
The Ukrainians have suffered so much in terms of economical and political upheavals, that they are looking anywhere for answers out of their troubles, so you will be able to share the Gospel with thousands throughout Ukraine.
Many will be responded and lives will be changed for eternity!

The doors continue to remain open for missionaries to work in Ukraine, but for how long?

Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future...
